🧪✨ Biomolecules: Tested & Revealed!

Science got messy (and fun!) in Mr. Pagawisan’s Sophomore Biology Class! Our young scientists rolled up their sleeves for a Biomolecules Testing Lab 🔬💡. Using Benedict’s, Lugol’s, Biuret, and even the classic brown paper test, they checked everyday items for sugars, proteins, and lipids.

The test subjects? 👀
💧 Water
🥛 Milk
🥤 Zero-sugar soda
🍎 Apple juice
🌽 An “unknown” solution (spoiler: corn syrup!)
🛢️ And of course, vegetable oil

From color changes to paper stains, the results showed just how much hidden science is in the foods and drinks around us. Students didn’t just learn the theory—they saw biology in action!

👏 Huge shoutout to our sophomores for bringing energy and curiosity to the lab!

🧪 The Great Wall of Lipids!

Mr. Pagawisan’s Advanced Biology class explored why lipids make excellent “walls” for our cells—the material that makes up the cell membrane!

Students worked with 15 total setups, each mixing two of the following:
💧 Water | 🍶 Alcohol | 🍯 Sugar syrup | 🌽 Vegetable oil | 🧈 Melted butter | 🥓 Melted lard

By observing which combinations mixed and which stayed separated, the class got to see firsthand how lipids form strong barriers. This mimics what happens in living cells: the lipid bilayer keeps water-based environments separate while still allowing the cell to function.

💡 Key Takeaway: Lipids don’t mix well with water or other polar substances, which is exactly why they form protective membranes—nature’s way of keeping cells organized and alive!

Great job, Advanced Bio! 👏 Your curiosity and teamwork made science come alive today. 🌱✨

DCHS Sophomores attended "Cultivating Careers" yesterday morning at DCC. This hands-on event is designed to grow opportunities for students by connecting them directly with employers, industries, and career pathways shaping our region’s workforce.

The event was put on by the MT Chamber Foundation, in partnership with John Deere, RDO Equipment Co, C&B Operations, Dawson Community College, the Glendive Chamber of Commerce, and the Montana Department of Labor & Industry. A big thanks to all of these entities! This was a fun and engaging experience for our students.
